The Seitou Ryu badge was designed by Sensei Richard Gregory in June 2005.

There were numerous ideas for what we wanted to show in the badge design. Ultimately it was decided that the badge would represent a balance of the two styles of karate upon which Seitou Ryu is based, Shotokan and Goju Ryu.

The central spiral is a symbol that represents balance. Of all the symbols for balance that were found, the circular style of this one in particular stood out above the rest as a fitting Goju Ryu image as the style is well known for its circular and fluid movements.

The red and white circle behind the spiral is a combination of an adapted yin yang symbol and the Japanese rising sun. Originally the two halves were separated horizontally with the red being on top, making the rising sun more prominent, but it was changed to a vertical separation to keep it in symmetry with the spiral symbol. The traditional Japanese red and white colours/rising sun are very common in Shotokan and can be seen on many Shotokan club badges.

Overall, the badge equally represents Shotokan and Goju Ryu, giving it a whole meaning of balance between the hard/soft and linear/circular areas of karate in which we train.
